Esf - Works is the showcase and forum for policy and practice lessons from 2007-2013 European Social Fund in England

Web Link European Social Fund - ESF

A call for proposals for innovative and transnational ESF projects was launched on 31 October 2008 and closed on 16 January 2009.

The call sought regional applications under six themes for innovation:

  • Active Inclusion
  • Engaging with Employers
  • ICT and the Digital Divide
  • Meeting New Challenges - Demographic Change (Older Workers and Migration)
  • Meeting New Challenges - Skills for Climate Change and Sustainable Development
  • Social Enterprise

As a result of the call, 32 projects are being funded.

The Big Lottery funded the access Enterprise Project which has now been completed, more information on this project can be found on past English projects on MEH website.

Web Link Grundtvig (Life Long Learning)

The Grundtvig programme is part of the European Union's Lifelong Learning Programme. It supports individuals and organisations involved in non-vocational adult education to participate in European training activities and projects.

Web Link Leonardo (Lifelong Learning Programme)

The Leonardo Programme is part of the European Union's Lifelong Learning Programme.

It supports UK vocational education and training (VET) organisations, staff and learners to work together with European partners to improve training, skills and employability.

Leonardo have funded a number of projects taht MEH has been involved in and more details of those projects can be found in past and current EU projects.

Web Link DG Enterprise and Industry

In line with Europe 2020, the EU's strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, the Directorate General Enterprise and Industry is working towards five general objectives:

  • to strengthen Europe's industrial base and promote the transition to a low carbon economy;
  • to promote innovation as a means to generate new sources of growth and meet societal needs;
  • to encourage the creation and growth of SMEs and promote an entrepreneurial culture;
  • to ensure an open internal market for goods; and to support the European presence in space.

Web Link European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)

The Department manages the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in England. This fund is focused on reducing economic disparities within and between member states by supporting economic regeneration and safeguarding jobs. Funding is targeted to meet three overarching objectives:

  • Convergence
  • Regional Competitiveness
  • European Territorial Co-operation.


Since 2000, England has benefited from more than €5bn of funding, with a further €3.2 billion being invested between 2007 and 2013 in local projects around the country. These programmes are designed to meet current needs by targeting employment, small and medium-sized enterprises, innovation, high-tech business investment, among other key priorities identified by local partners.
